The new range of Intel processors includes an 18-core


A few months ago AMD launched its proposal to take over the market, which are Ryzen 3, 5 and 7. These processors stood out for their high power and low price. But Intel does not seem to be making it that easy ...

Intel launches new processor range: X-Series

Today Intel has just announced a new range of processors. This would not be for the basic users, but for the more professional users who require greater power .
X-Series , as the company called it, would supply processors to its most demanding users. These new chips would replace the previous Extreme models, but this time with more varied options. In this way not only is there an i7 Extreme, but in the X-Series range we have i5 and i7 processors , in addition to the new Intel i9 .

And what features will these new processors have in the X-Series range?
  • The Intel i5 X-Series ( codenamed i5-7640X ) will come equipped with 4 cores at 4GHz each, and the price will be $ 242.
  • The Intel i7 X-Series will come in several models:
    • The i7-7740X will have 4 cores and 8 threads at 4.3GHz (4.5GHz with Turbo Boost).
    • The  i7-7800X will have 6 cores and 12 wires at 3.5GHz (4GHz with Turbo Boost).
    • The i7-7820X will have 8 cores and 16 threads at 3.6GHz (4.3GHz with Turbo Boost). 
  • The Intel i9 X-Series will also come in several models:
    • The  i9-7900X will come equipped with 10 cores and 20 threads at 3.3GHz and 4.3GHz with the Turbo Boost.
    • The i9-7920X , which for now is only known to have 12 cores and 24 threads of execution.
    • The i9-7940X , which we do not know much, except that it will have 14 cores and 24 wires, and like the rest will have transistors of 14nm.
    • And finally the i9-7960X , which will feature 16 cores and 32 threads.
As we can see, we still know almost nothing, as they have just announced. We still need to know the detailed and definitive prices .
In addition, much remains to be learned from the new i9 X-Series range For example, it does not know the clock frequency except for the basic model. Although, given the increasing number of cores we can assume that the working frequency of these processors will fall , and in fact in the latter model the frequency will probably be at 2GHz or less.

The new Intel i9 Extreme

While I said that the X-Series range would replace the Extreme range, it will not disappear. Instead it will identify the most powerful Intel i9 , and therefore the best range of desktop processors we can get in this generation.
Of this new processor, the i9-7980XE , known as Intel i9 Extreme, little is known. For now on the official website of Intel only mention that it will be manufactured with technology of 14nm and that will have the roaring number of 18 cores and 36 threads of execution . Although we still have to know the clock frequency and the cache that will incorporate, there is no doubt that it will be a real monster.

Where are the Intel Xeon after all this?

After analyzing this new information, there is only one question to be resolved: what will happen to the Intel Xeon?
The answer is clear, they will continue to exist . According to the Intel website, these new processors are intended for desktop computers , since they are from the iX series. It is therefore possible even to use them for servers , Intel Xeon will continue to exist as the main line of products for servers.
Although this leads to a simple doubt. What makes Xeon better than i7 or i9 for servers?  It is yet to know what differences will be between the i9 range and the Xeon. Although the most differentiating characteristics of the Xeons are the nuclei , they are still differentiated, since the Xeon with more nuclei has 24 (48 threads), and the i9 with more nuclei has 18 (36 threads). Although, the number of cores is not the only distinguishing feature of the Xeon.

Conclusion

As we can see, Intel is trying to recover what was lost by the Ryzen from AMD , and it seems that it is getting it. And in fact, with this new range are competing in the same way that did in its time AMD, with more cores.
