Scheduled obsolescence or why your iPhone will not last more than two years

Imagine a world where you buy an iPhone or an iPad and you can use them until one day you want to buy another one, but that in no case suffers from scheduled obsolescence and for example Apple leaves it out of its updates. Eye, this is not something exclusive of Apple, in fact if there are gadgets designed to last taking care of the maximum quality, those are the ones manufactured by Cupertino . But even so, there is not a single technological company that manufactures something to last a lifetime, otherwise ... go business. Obviously, they think more in their pockets than in the environment .
Below we review a report jointly done by Greenpeace and iFixit in which they have gutted more than 40 smartphones, tablets and laptops in recent years, to see how companies deliberately plan the planned obsolescence of their gadgets .

The 5 ways to speed up the scheduled obsolescence of a gadget

Devices are designed to make your repair complicated

Changing memory or upgrading a laptop's hard drive is not as simple as it used to be. Why? Basically, because the tendency is to weld the components to the plate , so that the repair is much more complicated.
The same happens with the change of battery or screen in the case of smartphones , which could do almost anyone before and now every time try to restrict access more, to do it by authorized technical service or directly you are more profitable to buy new one. Clear examples of these practices? Apple, LG or Samsung.

Devices becoming less robust and more fragile

Raise your hand if the cell phone has ever broken . And is that any fall is almost fatal, regardless of the pikes and scratches, it is increasingly common for smartphones barely endure a fall of the pocket without a cover to make your screen crack.

The reason is that they are made of glass, and although more and more innovations in materials, the screens is a bad endemic , something that will increase with this current trend to manufacture smartphones without frames, with all the front made of Cristal. There is more to see the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the iPhone 8 that is about to leave in September.

Batteries, increasingly difficult to replace

In the case of iPad and iPhone, it has always been that way, but once it was easy enough to remove the back covers and change it with little effort . Do you remember the explosions of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7? They could easily have been prevented from having removable batteries. Unfortunately, almost 70% of the devices tested had batteries that were either hard to remove or directly impossible to do, such as the Apple MacBook or the Samsung Galaxy S8, when attached to the device panels.

The tools to repair are becoming more exclusive

Even when repair is possible, it is becoming more expensive and time consuming, and the tools used are not standard, but specific screwdrivers are needed: Apple iPhone, Oppo R9, Huawei P9 ... are some examples of devices Which require special instruments.

Manuals and parts are not easy to get

Very few manufacturers provide information on how to repair their products . In fact, of the 17 brands analyzed in the study, only three - Dell, Fairphone and HP - provide both parts and repair manuals.

What eco-friendly gadgets can we buy?

From what is extracted in the study it is clear that brands like Fairphone, Dell and HP facilitate the repair work in case of failure, something to take into account.
Also, within the smartphone market, surprisingly, both the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus stand out as a green terminal with a score of 7/10, with positive mentions on the screen. Therefore, we could say that it is the two most eco-friendly smartphones on the market .
Another factor to take into account that Greenpeace has not included in its study is the reuse, something in which Apple stands out , that is to say, that while at the two years many terminals of other brands are unusable, at Apple they remain operative, That an alternative would be to sell it so that other less demanding users would give them a new life.
