Comparison of cameras: iPhone 8 Plus vs Google Pixel 2

The iPhone 8 is, at least until next November 3 that goes on sale the iPhone X, the best iPhone that is now on sale. The Pixel 2 is also the best representative of pure Android , which Google designs and prepares thoroughly, both software and hardware. For that reason it is very interesting to compare the cameras of these two contentientes to see if one of the two stands out in the quality of his camera.
Remember the specifications of the rear camera of each of these smartphones.

iPhone 8 Plus

The new iPhone 8 has a main 12-megapixel rear camera, with an f / 1.8 aperture that allows you to get more light than before, compared to the camera of the iPhone 7. The sensor is also larger, which translates into better photos with less amount of light. The secondary camera, telephoto type, with aperture f / 2.8, less amount of light due to lens type, which is not a wide angle but a telephoto lens. Explained in a very simplified way, it basically means that what is further away is represented closer, as if we had zoomed in. It is precisely this lens that allows you to switch to a 2x optical zoom quickly on the iPhone 8 Plus. In addition, the two-lens system allows you to blur or darken the background using what Apple calls portrait mode, achieving very spectacular effects. Both lenses have, unlike the iPhone 7 Plus, optical stabilization.

The front camera has 7 megapixels and an aperture f / 2.2, allows to make quite decent photos than many iPhone models previously, especially the iPhone 6 never had a very good front camera. It is one of the points where Apple has arrived years later, not having been one of its priorities. Fortunately, the iPhone 8 has a very good front camera that allows you to record 4K video and get photos in great detail.

Pixel 2

The new Google proposal also has the ability to blur the background to create a portrait effect, but it does with a single lens also 12 megapixels. It has a f / 1.8 aperture as the main one of the iPhone 8 and also has optical image stabilization, so in theory both cameras are the same in specs. Its front camera is 8 megapixels, with a f / 2.4 aperture, slightly more closed than the iPhone 8, but with more megapixels in its sensor.

Photos in different situations

Next, we show you the same photos made with each machine, in different situations. We start with a painted wall with bright colors. As we see, in this case the iPhone 8 highlights the colors much more. The Pixel 2 seems to get a bit more detail when the image is enlarged but in general the iPhone 8 is a clear winner in this case, with a more contrasted and colorful image, generally more pleasant, compared to that of Pixel 2.

In the following image, again the colors stand out more in the shot made with the iPhone 8, but the difference is less noticeable. Both machines blur the background in an outstanding way, but in a different way. What is more, in this case, is already a matter of artistic taste rather than image quality.

In the following example, Manhattan's famous Flatiron building can best be seen in Pixel 2, with more detail in the shadows, and this time, a more vivid color in the blue umbrellas. The differences are minimal but the Pixel 2 presents an image with a better compensation between the lights and the shadows, in addition to that added detail. The HDR mode was disabled on both machines.

In this other image of man made with LEGO. the photo motif in general is fine in both images, but the background behind it is very exposed on the image of the iPhone 8 Plus.

Seeing that area a little more extended, we see the difference between both machines clearly.

In Tom's Guide , where they have made this comparison, say that in the case of this image is a tie. But that background with all the detail completely lost by a very strong overexposure makes for us, in this case, lose the image of the iPhone 8 Plus, although the subject itself could be even better photographed ... but there are than to judge the whole picture.

In the case of the Empire State Building, the iPhone 8 Plus is a clear winner with a much more detailed photo. Although it does not seem the reason is that in this case the secondary camera is being used, with a type of telephoto lens that allows to get much more details of distant objects, as it happens in this image.

In this case, the same defect of slight over-exposure that caused the iPhone to lose the image of Lego man, helps him to win in this situation, with a photo that has more realistic and highlighted colors, compared to the one of the rear camera of Pixel 2, less exposed and contrasted. In this case, the iPhone 8 is a clear winner.

In this case, a low-light scene has been used to see how such behave these cameras, in theory better prepared than ever before to take pictures in poor lighting. As we see, the iPhone 8 Plus has given the photo a much redder tone than the Pixel 2, which also wins in the detail, best achieved in this shot. The iPhone 8 Plus clearly loses in this occasion.

In the case of the source, the image of the iPhone 8 Plus has more contrast, better overall color, again the iPhone 8 Plus wins in this shot. In this table, you can see the result of all these images and some more, leaving as a winner in the total count the iPhone 8 Plus, but by little difference.
